Culture Cluster, Hoogeveen (NL)

About This Project

One single building complex for all cultural activities in Hoogeveen is being developed on the site of Theatre De Tamboer. Part of the existing theatre will remain and a large part will be newly constructed for new units such as a pop music venue, a library, a theatre, a large main hall and rehearsal rooms. NOAHH and Civic view the new complex as a culture cluster for the city, a place where all the users will unite in a new context and take on a new, joint identity. We aim to design a new inspiring venue which residents and users alike can call their own, a joint breeding ground and a cultural living room; an innovative hub where people can connect and spend quality time together.

The roofed in building has an open plinth and is composed of small building components that together form an iconic whole. The shell consists of wood and sustainable, robust materials, offering flexibility through a cleverly designed grid. The building is a beacon of light, inviting passers-by to come inside and explore the venue. The ground floor is publicly accessible, enclosing spaces to meet and connect, as well as accommodating various activities taking place throughout the day and evening. One of the most striking eyecatchers of the new building is the large identity wall that runs through the complex, representing the various users of the building as well as acting as a visual platform for all cultural activities taking place inside the building. The intermediate floors in the building have an informal working atmosphere; the dance halls, rehearsal rooms and meeting rooms are located here. At the very top of the building the maker spaces are situated.

Competition finalist
