MFA De Vriendschap forms the new social heart of Kats: a contemporary village building where meeting, sports, culture, learning, and everyday life come together. The design is inspired by the simplicity of traditional local farmhouses, translated into an open and welcoming architecture with a strong relationship between inside and outside.
The clear volumes, generous veranda, and warm material palette give the building a recognizable village character. Large transparent facades connect the interior to the village square, terrace, and surrounding landscape.
The architecture also subtly refers to the historic madder production that once played an important role in the Zeeland landscape and economy. The warm earthy tones of the facades, interior finishes, textiles, and public spaces are inspired by the natural red and terracotta pigments derived from madder roots. These tones create a warm and tactile atmosphere while embedding the building in the cultural history of the region.
This reference to madder production can be expressed not only through color, but also through materiality and artistic integration. Brick tones, ceramic elements, stained wood, fabrics, artwork, and paving accents can together form a layered palette inspired by the historic processing of madder. In this way, the building connects local heritage with a contemporary architectural identity.
The MFA is designed as a flexible and multifunctional building without an excess of corridors or circulation spaces. The different functions — sports, gathering, retail, culture, and care — flow naturally into one another and can operate simultaneously or independently. Sliding walls, visual connections, and centrally organized support spaces make the building compact, efficient, and future-proof. The MFA, largely constructed in wood will be energy neutral.
At the center of the building is the village living room: a warm communal space where residents meet for coffee, activities, exhibitions, or informal encounters. The local shop is also conceived as a social meeting place, combining everyday amenities with hospitality and interaction.
The outdoor space is an integral part of the design. The village square, art plaza, veranda, and surrounding green landscape flow seamlessly into the building and encourage interaction between generations. Art is given a visible presence within the public realm, reinforcing the cultural identity of Kats.
MFA De Vriendschap is therefore more than a public facility: it is a contemporary village living room that strengthens social cohesion and gives new meaning to collective village life in Kats.
MFA De Vriendschap vormt het nieuwe sociale hart van Kats: een eigentijds dorpsgebouw waarin ontmoeten, bewegen, leren en ontspannen samenkomen. Het ontwerp is geïnspireerd op de schaal en eenvoud van de Zeeuwse boerderijtypologie, vertaald naar een open en uitnodigende architectuur met een sterke relatie tussen binnen en buiten.
De heldere volumes, royale veranda en warme materialisatie geven het gebouw een herkenbare dorpse uitstraling. Grote transparante gevels verbinden het interieur met het dorpsplein, het terras en het omliggende landschap.
De architectuur verwijst daarnaast subtiel naar de historische meekrapproductie die ooit een belangrijke rol speelde in het Zeeuwse landschap en de regionale economie. De warme aardetinten van gevels, interieurafwerkingen, textiel en openbare ruimte zijn geïnspireerd op de natuurlijke rood- en terracottapigmenten die uit meekrapwortels werden gewonnen. Deze kleuren geven het gebouw een warme, tactiele sfeer en verankeren het tegelijkertijd in de cultuurhistorie van de regio.
De verwijzing naar meekrap kan niet alleen zichtbaar worden in kleurgebruik, maar ook in materialisatie en kunsttoepassingen. Metselwerk in warme roodbruine tinten, keramische accenten, gebeitst hout, textiel, kunstwerken en verfijnde details in bestrating of interieur kunnen samen een gelaagd kleurenpalet vormen dat verwijst naar de historische verwerking van meekrap. Zo ontstaat een eigentijdse architectuur die lokale geschiedenis en identiteit op subtiele wijze voelbaar maakt.
Het MFA is ontworpen als een flexibel en multifunctioneel gebouw met nauwelijks verkeersruimtes of gangen. De verschillende functies – sport, ontmoeting, winkel, cultuur en zorg – vloeien logisch in elkaar over en kunnen gelijktijdig of afzonderlijk worden gebruikt.
Hierdoor konden we eenvoudig een energieneutraal gebouw realiseren. Schuifwanden, zichtlijnen en centraal georganiseerde ondersteunende functies maken het gebouw compact, efficiënt en toekomstbestendig.
De centrale dorpskamer vormt het hart van het gebouw: een warme ontmoetingsplek waar bewoners samenkomen voor koffie, activiteiten, exposities of spontane ontmoetingen. Ook de winkel is nadrukkelijk ontworpen als sociale plek voor het dorp, waar dagelijkse voorzieningen worden gecombineerd met ontmoeting en verblijf.
De buitenruimte is integraal onderdeel van het ontwerp. Het dorpsplein, het kunstplein, de veranda en de groene tuinstructuren lopen vanzelfsprekend over in het gebouw en stimuleren ontmoeting tussen generaties. Kunst krijgt daarbij een zichtbare plek in de openbare ruimte en versterkt de culturele identiteit van Kats.
MFA De Vriendschap is daarmee meer dan een accommodatie: het is een eigentijdse dorpskamer die de sociale samenhang versterkt en een nieuwe betekenis geeft aan het collectieve leven van Kats.
