A cultural catalyst between city and park
The new Theater Lampegiet is conceived as more than a venue for the performing arts. The building is positioned as an urban catalyst that connects park, city and society. Located between Kerkewijk and the Duivenweide park, the theater forms an open and inviting hinge where urban life and landscape reinforce one another.
The design deliberately opens up to its surroundings. With an active plinth, a lively theater square and a direct relationship with the park, a continuous urban landscape emerges in which interior and exterior flow seamlessly together. The theater is therefore not only an evening destination, but a place that is meaningful throughout the day, for meeting, staying and spontaneous cultural activity.
Everything is theater
At the heart of the building lies a light-filled central void that acts as its beating heart. Around this space, the main theater, multifunctional hall and cinema are organized as all-organizing biotopes. All necessary secondary functions, including acoustics, technical systems, logistics and backstage facilities, are integrated within these volumes. This keeps the surrounding spaces open, flexible and welcoming.
The foyers are not merely circulation areas, but full-fledged places to linger and extensions of the performance spaces. The theater café and the artists’ foyer are also part of this public experience. In this way, the entire building becomes part of the theatrical narrative: everything is theater.
Weaving together park, city and culture
The theater acts as an anchor for the greening of the Duivenweide area. Together with the park, the event square and the terraces, a network of places is created where culture and nature meet. This outdoor space is designed as an attractive landscape for staying, where biodiversity is visible and tangible.
The Kerkewijk is likewise transformed from a traffic-oriented street into a green urban square. Trees, planting and water elements provide shade, cooling and a pleasant microclimate, strengthening the role of the theater as a place of encounter within the city center.
Nature-inclusive and future-proof
Greening and nature inclusivity are integral to the design. Green roofs and façades contribute to water retention, cooling and urban ecology. By applying native and flowering plant species, a rich biotope is created for birds, insects and plants.
In this way, the theater contributes not only socially but also ecologically to the city. The building becomes part of the urban ecosystem and actively supports a healthy and climate-resilient living environment.
A new cultural landmark for Veenendaal
The new Theater Lampegiet is an all-sided, transparent and welcoming building that is firmly anchored in its context. It connects Kerkewijk and park, inside and outside, culture and everyday life. A place where diverse audiences come together and where culture can be experienced in an accessible and natural way.

Een culturele katalysator tussen stad en park
Het nieuwe Theater Lampegiet is ontworpen als méér dan een podium voor cultuur. Het gebouw positioneert zich als een stedelijke katalysator die park, stad en samenleving met elkaar verbindt. Gelegen tussen de Kerkewijk en het park Duivenweide vormt het theater een open en uitnodigend schakelpunt, waar stedelijke levendigheid en groen elkaar versterken. Het ontwerp opent zich nadrukkelijk naar de omgeving. Met een actieve plint, een levendig theaterplein en een directe relatie met het park ontstaat een continu stedelijk landschap waarin binnen en buiten naadloos in elkaar overlopen. Het theater is daarmee niet alleen een avondbestemming, maar een plek die de hele dag door betekenisvol is: voor ontmoeting, verblijf en spontane culturele activiteiten.
Alles is theater
In het hart van het gebouw ligt een lichte centrale vide die fungeert als het kloppend middelpunt. Hieromheen zijn de theaterzaal, multifunctionele zaal en filmzaal georganiseerd als allesorganiserende biotopen. Alle noodzakelijke nevenfuncties , akoestiek, techniek, logistiek en backstage , zijn geïntegreerd in deze volumes. Hierdoor blijven de ruimtes ertussen open, flexibel en uitnodigend. Foyers zijn niet slechts verkeersruimtes, maar volwaardige verblijfsplekken en verlengstukken van de zalen. Ook het theatercafé en de artiestenfoyer maken onderdeel uit van deze publieke beleving. Zo wordt het hele gebouw onderdeel van het theatrale verhaal: alles is theater.
Park, stad en cultuur verweven
Het theater fungeert als ankerpunt voor de vergroening van de Duivenweide. Samen met het park, het evenementenplein en de terrassen ontstaat een netwerk van plekken waar cultuur en natuur elkaar ontmoeten. Deze buitenruimte is ontworpen als een aantrekkelijk verblijfslandschap waarin biodiversiteit zichtbaar en voelbaar aanwezig is.. Ook de Kerkewijk wordt getransformeerd van verkeersruimte naar groen parkplein. Bomen, beplanting en water zorgen voor verkoeling, schaduw en een prettig microklimaat, en versterken de rol van het theater als ontmoetingsplek in de binnenstad.
Natuurinclusief en toekomstbestendig
Vergroening en natuurinclusiviteit zijn integraal onderdeel van het ontwerp. Groene daken en gevels dragen bij aan waterbuffering, verkoeling en stedelijke ecologie. Door het toepassen van inheemse en bloeiende beplanting ontstaat een rijke biotoop voor vogels, insecten en planten. Het theater draagt zo niet alleen sociaal, maar ook ecologisch bij aan de stad. Het gebouw wordt onderdeel van het stedelijk ecosysteem en levert een actieve bijdrage aan een gezonde, klimaatbestendige leefomgeving.
Een nieuwe culturele plek voor Veenendaal
Het nieuwe Theater Lampegiet is een alzijdig, transparant en gastvrij gebouw dat zich stevig verankert in zijn context. Het verbindt Kerkewijk en park, binnen en buiten, cultuur en dagelijks leven. Een plek waar uiteenlopende doelgroepen samenkomen en waar cultuur laagdrempelig en vanzelfsprekend wordt beleefd. .
